Abstract

Aldols of the general formula RCH(OH)C(CH3)2CHO, in which R is hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 9 carbon atoms, are prepared by reacting an aliphatic aldehyde of formula RCHO with isobutyraldehyde in a molar ratio of isobutyraldehyde to the other aldehyde of at least 1.1 to 1, at a temperature of from 50 DEG to 90 DEG C. in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate. It is advantageous to use at least a one molar excess of isobutyraldehyde per mol. of other aldehyde. The preferred alkali metal carbonate is potassium carbonate. The catalyst can be used in amounts varying from 2 to 10% based on the weight of isobutyraldehyde and is preferably used as a 20-50% aqueous solution. Examples are given of the reaction of isobutyraldehyde with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde and n-butyraldehyde to give hydroxypivalaldehyde,3-hydroxy-2.2-dimethylbutyraldehyde, 3 - hydroxy - 2.2 - dimethylvaleraldehyde and 3 - hydroxy - 2.2 - dimethylhexaldehyde respectively.
