Abstract

In operating vertical shaft furnaces wherein a mixture of raw material, e.g. cement forming material, limestone or ore, solid fuel and inert material is charged from the top and passes down in counter-current to an ascending air blast through a reaction zone and cooling zone, and the treated material is removed at the bottom, the ratio between the fuel on the one hand and the treated material and inert material on the other hand is determined such that the heat capacity of the total amount of material is substantially equal to the heat capacity of the amount of air necessary for the complete combustion of the fuel, and the ratio between the material to be treated and the inert material is chosen such that the heat produced by the complete combustion of the solid fuel corresponds to the net heat requirement of the material to be treated. Already treated material is suitably used as inert material. The kilns disclosed in Specification 694,430, [Group V], may be used.ALSO:In operating vertical shaft furnaces wherein a mixture of raw material, e.g. cement-forming material, solid fuel and inert material is charged from the top and passes down in counter-current to an ascending air blast through a reaction zone and cooling zone, and the treated material is removed at the bottom, the ratio between the fuel on the one hand and the treated material and inert material on the other hand is determined such that the heat capacity of the total amount of material is substantially equal to the heat capacity of the amount of air necessary for the complete combustion of the fuel, and the ratio between the material to be treated and the inert material is chosen such that the heat produced by the complete combustion of the solid fuel corresponds to the net heat requirement of the material to be treated.
