Abstract
706,090. Variable transmission lines. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 15, 1946 [March 24, 1945], No. 8190/46. Addition to 685,990, [Group XL(c)]. Class 40 (8) For varying the electrical lengths of two transmission lines 17, 18 and 19, 20 in opposite senses, in radio direction-finding apparatus, two pairs of semi-circular dielectric discs 22 ... 25 are continuously rotated upon a shaft 26. Each pair of semi-circular dielectric discs 22 . . . 25 the like, embraces one leg such as 17, 19, of each transmission line, so that the lengths of the lines are simultaneously varied in opposite senses. In order that the surge impedance of the lines may not vary, a circular metallic disc having a thick half 28 and a thin half 29, Fig. 4, is mounted on the same shaft 26. The conductors 17 . . . 20 are so shaped, Fig. 2, that the phase delay varies sinusoidally when the disc rotates uniformly; or the conductors may be straight and the dielectric shaped.
