Abstract
706,040. Screw jacks. SMITH'S JACKING SYSTEMS, Ltd. May 20, 1952 [June 1, 1951], No. 13103/51. Class 78 (3) In a screw jack, the screw 15 is rotated by bevel gears 22, 31 located in a housing 25 which has a bifurcated lug 37 loosely engaging a pin 38 secured to the screw support 12 in such a manner that the housing is prevented from rotating relative to the support, but is capable of limited movement in other directions. In a modification (not shown), the lug 37 has a hole loosely surrounding the pin 38. The support 12 may be secured to the top of a tube which surrounds the screw, but, as shown, it is secured to the top of a pair of converving legs 10, the lower spaced ends of which are joined by a member 13 which supports the lower end of the screw through a ball 16. In a modification (not shown) the screw is freely suspended from a ball race carried by the plate 12, and the ball 16 is dispensed with. A bracket 35, welded to the interior of housing 25, has bearing holes 35a, 35b for the screw, and bevel wheel spindle 30, respectively, but, in a modification (not shown) this bracket is replaced by a boss integral with the housing. Pivoted to the nut 17 at 19 is a member 18 adapted to engage a socket in the motor vehicle to be lifted ; a pin 20 limits the upward movement of member 18.
