Abstract

704,941. Hydraulic machines; valves. BALLINGER, L. J. H. Aug. 25, 1949, No. 22134/49. Classes 69 (2) and 135 A hydraulic pressure system for the sequential operation of a pair of working cylinders comprises a first working cylinder 8, Fig. 1, having a piston 11 urged outwardly by pressure liquid and inwardly by springs 12, a piston valve 26 adjustably loaded by a weight 50 mounted on a lever 40, and a second working cylinder 19 having a piston 20 urged outwardly by pressure liquid and inwardly by springs 21. In operation, a manually-actuated cock 3 is rotated to connect a pump 1 to a duct 5 having branches 6, 7 leading to the cylinder 8 and the piston valve 26 respectively. The piston in the cylinder 8 moves outwardly until arrested by an adjustable stop 15 whence pressure in the system builds up to raise the piston valve 26 to connect the pump supply to the second cylinder 19 to move its piston 20 outwards. On completion of the working stroke of the piston 20, the cock 3 is moved to disconnect the pump from the system and connect the cylinder 8 to sump. The pressure in the system then falls and both pistons are urged inwardly by their respective springs substantially simultaneously. The first cylinder exhausting through the cock 3 and the second cylinder through radial ports 32, 34 in the piston valve and a line 25. The rotary cock 3 may, if desired, be arranged to simultaneously supply more than one " first " working cylinder. In a modification, the cock 3 has a ratchet wheel 57, Fig. 6, a notched disc 69 and adjustable pins 72. The wheel 57 engages a pawl 60 mounted on the second piston 20 so that on the outward stroke of this piston the pawl 60 rotates the wheel by one tooth to automatically connect the first cylinder to sump and as before return the pistons 11, 20 to their initial positions. The disc 69 engages a spring-loaded rod 74 so that on movement of the cock 3 from one of its ports to another a valve 67 closes to cut off the supply of pressure liquid to the cylinder 8. The pins 72 engage a bell-crank lever 73 to reduce the pump output when the valve 67 is closed.
