Abstract

An extreme pressure grease consists of a lubricating oil thickened with an alkali or alkaline earth metal soap of a sulphurized or sulphurized-phosphorized "fatty material." The term "fatty material" includes materials containing a substantial proportion of oils containing fatty acids, e.g. tall oil. The sulphurized or sulphurized-phosphorized fatty material is mixed with an equal amount of lubricating, oil heated, the desired metal solution, usually a hydroxide, added, and the temperature raised to dehydrate. The remainder of the oil is then added, the batch heated till fluid, and then cooled and worked. Sulphurized or phosphorized-sulphurized sperm oil, sulphurized lard, animal fat or tall oils, sulphur monochloride-treated fatty oils, and phosphorus sulphide treated sulphurized fatty oils may be used. A sulphur content of 2-20 per cent. with or without a phosphorus content of 0.1-0.5 per cent. is generally suitable. The soap content may be 10-50, preferably 15-30 per cent. A mineral lubricating oil and/or synthetics such as long chain esters, e.g. sebacates and adipates, polymerized cracked wax, and alkylated aromatics may be used. Examples are given of greases having the percentage composition: mineral oil 78.3 sulphurized or phosphorized sperm oil, sulphurized tall oil or sulphur monochloride-treated lard oil 20, and sodium hydroxide or lithium hydroxide monohydrate 1.7. The use of a mixture of solvent extracted mineral oil and di-2-ethyl-hexyl sebacate is also illustrated. Sulphurized oils are prepared by heating sperm oil with molten sulphur at 300 DEG F. or more and then, if desired, with phosphorus sulphide at 215 DEG F. or by heating lard oil and S2Cl2 at 300 DEG F.
