Abstract
A phospho-sulphurized fatty oil useful as an additive for lubricating oils is prepared by reacting a fatty oil, sulphur and a phosphorus sulphide at an elevated temperature for a time sufficient to effect complete reaction. Fatty oils specified are sperm, lard and rape-seed oils and the phosphorus sulphide may be the pentasulphide or sesquisulphide. A temperature of 250 DEG to 450 DEG F. and a reaction period of 1/2 to 12 hours may be used and the reactants may be mixed together and heated or, preferably, the oil is first sulphurized and then reacted with the phosphorus sulphide. In an example, 100 parts of sperm oil and 12 parts by weight of sulphur are heated to 365 DEG F. for 1 3/4 hours and then 1 part of phosphorus pentasulphide is added and the temperature raised to 390 DEG F. for about 45 minutes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the reaction of fatty acids, such as hydrogenated fish-oil acids, with sulphur and a phosphorus sulphide. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a mineral lubricating oil, a halogenated hydrocarbon and an additive prepared by reacting, at an elevated temperature, a fatty oil with sulphur and a phosphorus sulphide. The fatty oil is preferably sperm oil but may also be lard oil or rapeseed oil, and the phosphorus sulphide may be the pentasulphide or the sesquisulphide. Halogenated hydrocarbons referred to are chlorinated paraffin wax and chlorinated or brominated kerosene. Pour point depressants and other conventional additives may also be added to the composition. In an example, 10 parts of an additive obtained by sulphurising sperm oil at 365 DEG F. and then adding phosphorus pentasulphide and heating the mixture at 390 DEG F. is blended with 85 parts of mineral oil and 5 parts of chlorinated paraffin wax. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to an additive prepared by reacting fatty acids such as hydrogenated fish oil acids with sulphur and a phosphorus sulphide. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
