Abstract
704,239. Feeding material to endless conveyers: hoppers. McALPINE & SON, Ltd., Sir A. July 3, 1951 [July 4, 1950], No. 16590/50. Class 78 (1) A hopper adapted to be placed astride the track of an endless conveyer for receiving material from one or more sources such as excavators and feeding it to the conveyer, is provided with a length of auxiliary track for the upper run of the conveyer which is adapted to lie above the normal track of the conveyer at least in the region in which the material is fed to the conveyer during the passage of the upper run of the conveyer beneath the hopper, and with means such as wheels or rollers to enable it to be moved along the line of the conveyer as work proceeds. As shown, an endless belt conveyer 16 having its upper run normally supported by troughing rollers 18 receives material from a hopper unit 10 adapted to be moved on wheels 12 along rails 14 extending parallel with the conveyer. The hopper unit is formed with a floor 17 having idlers 19 for supporting the upper run of the conveyer belt. Material received in a hopper member 24 is delivered on to the conveyer belt 20 by an endless belt conveyer 21 supported on rollers 22, 23 mounted in the hopper unit. The idlers 19a adjacent the ends of the conveyer 21 are coated or formed of resilient material or are resiliently mounted so as to withstand the impact of the falling material. The conveyor 21 may be driven in either direction at a variable speed. Chains 28 assist in breaking up clots of material fed by the conveyer 21.
