Classes 7(2) and 7(3) In a fuel-injection engine having, in the cylinder head, a part-spherical combustion chamber which is not water-cooled, the exhaust gases are passed through the cylinder head in contact with the walls of the combustion chamber. In Fig. 1 the exhaust pipe 24 leads into the hollow cylinder head and the exhaust gases flow over ribs 27 on the combustion chamber 16 to an outlet pipe 25. The cylinder head may be of aluminium alloy with an asbestos jacket and both the inlet and exhaust valves may be situated in the cylinder block as shown or the exhaust valve may be situated in the cylinder block and the inlet valve may comprise an overhead valve disposed over the piston. In a modification, Fig. 4, the exhaust gases from the exhaust ports 11 flow over the ribbed combustion chambers 16 into an exhaust jacket 35 in the cylinder head, from which the gases escape through a single outlet, and the space 34 around the induction passages 31 is supplied with cooling water through an inlet 37.
