Abstract

In preparing a granular laxative exhibiting retarded imbibition towards digestive juices, from gums containing mannogalactan hemicellulose, e.g. carob, garrofin or guar gum, the powdered endosperms of seeds containing the gums, e.g. algarobilla seeds, are mixed with water to form a soft, plastic, uniform mass which is granulated and gradually dehydrated, e.g. by drying in air or vacuum at temperatures not exceeding 110 DEG C. Granulation may be carried out under slight pressure, e.g. 2 to 3 kg/cm2, when the quantity of water used is 70 per cent. or more by weight of the powdered endosperms, and at great pressure, e.g. over 35 kg/cm2, when the amount of water is between 70 and 30 per cent. or when it is 30 per cent. or less and small quantities, e.g. 5 per cent. karaya gum, are added. The dried granules may be coated with a hydrophylic or absorbent coating, e.g. of karaya gum. They may be reduced to a size of 5 mm. or less for use in capsules. The granules may be compressed into tablets without using agglutinants. Phenolphthalein, belladonna, bile salts and hormones may be added to the gums before they are made into the plastic mass.ALSO:In preparing a granular laxative, exhibiting retarded imbibition towards digestive juices, from gums containing mannogalactan hemicellulose, e.g. carob, garrofin or guar gum, the powdered endosperms of seeds containing the gums, e.g. algarobilla seeds, are mixed with water to form a soft, plastic, uniform mass which is granulated and gradually dehydrated, e.g. by drying in air or vacuum at temperatures not exceeding 110 DEG C. Phenolphthalein, belladonna, bile salts and hormones may be added to the gums before they are made into the plastic mass.
