Abstract

703,709. Sails. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and JAMES, C. G. April 2, 1952 [April 2, 1951], No. 7539/51. Class 115 In reefing gear of the type in which reefing is effected by paying out the halyard A which supports the head of the sail B, at the same time rotating the boom G to wind the sail round it, the end of the halyard is bound on a reel F connected to the boom so as to be unwound from it as the sail is bound on to the boom, an intermediate part of the halyard being taken round a floating pulley E acted on by resilient means, e.g. rubber tension springs H, to take up slack and maintain a suitable tension in the halyard. The halyard may be controlled by a winch D on the mast C having a number of turns of the halyard passed round it, or the floating pulley E or the reel F may be in the form of a winch. The winch may be remotely controlled through flexible shafts.
