Abstract

703,281. Cylinder heads; valve gear; combustion chambers. LANOVA AKT.-GES. April 10, 1951 [Nov. 13, 1950], No. 8308/51. Addition to 694,465. Classes 7(2), 7(3) and 7(6) In a cylinder head 1 for an in-line engine wherein air for combustion or a fuel-air mixture is supplied through an aperture 8 in the top wall 7 of the head, and one exhaust valve 2 and two inlet valves 5 are provided, the induction passages lead upwards from the seats of the valves 5 and merge into a common passage 4 extending in a double curve towards the aperture 8 which is located in a plane parallel to and laterally of the plane Z-Z through the axes of the valves 5. The valve 2 is disposed on one side of the plane Y-Y which passes through the axis of the cylinder and is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis X-X of the engine, and the valves 5 are located on the opposite side of the plane Y-Y and one on each side of the plane X-X. There may be a separating wall 9 between the seats of the valves 5 which extends upwards into the passage 4 to form a reinforcing rib. The valves and apertures 8 of adjacent cylinders may be situated symmetrically about a plane W-W midway between the cylinders. Each pair of cylinders may have a common induction pipe provided with a single or sub-divided passage, and the induction pipes may be cast integrally with the cover for the valve-actuating gear. Operation of the valves 2, 5 may be effected by identical rocking levers 16, 12 operated by push rods and mounted on a shaft 17 carried in a pedestal 18 bolted to the wall 7 of the head, the lever for the valves 5 engaging a bridge 11 mounted on the stems. of the valves; alternatively, the levers of all the cylinders are mounted on a common shaft supported by bearings cast on the induction pipes and at its ends by bearing pedestals. The cylinders may have individual induction pipes constructed to provide bearings for the levers as described in the parent Specification. In a modification, the valve 2 is located in a pear-shaped combustion chamber the narrow part of which connects with an auxiliary chamber arranged coaxially with a fuel-injection nozzle in the combustion chamber, and the axes of the nozzle and auxiliary chamber may be downwardly inclined.
