Abstract

703,166. Shearing. NUFFIELD TOOLS & GAUGES, Ltd. Oct. 31, 1951 [Nov. 1, 1950], No. 26641/50. Class 83 (4) In an automatic shearing machine for cutting equal lengths from a moving strip comprising a shearing die between two sets of feed rollers and rigidly mounted on a sliding carrier to be reciprocated along the path of the feed, driving means to drive the die forwards in company with and at the speed of the work and mechanism responsive to the forward movement of the die carrier to operate the die there is provided a restraining means compelling the die carrier after operation of the die to dwell at the end of its approach to the set of feed rollers at the exit side of the die until the fresh leading edge of the work has been gripped by those rollers. In an embodiment stock is fed by means of driven rollers 4, 5, 7 and 8 through a die 6. The die 6 is rigidly mounted on a carrier 9 having a sleeve 46, Fig. 5, slidable on a rod 48 fixed between two posts 50, 51 and a sleeve 47 which is fixed to a rod 49 slidable in the posts 50, 51. A push rod 41 is connected to the rod 49 at one end and to a lever 37, Fig. 1, pivoted in an adjustable block 39 at the other. A flywheel 16 whose axis 5 at right-angles to the strip feed direction is driven through adjustable vee belt gearing from the shaft which drives the feed rollers and mounts a striker 28 on a block 29 adjustable across the face of the wheel 16. A counter-weight 34 is provided on the wheel 16. A facing 28A, at 45 degrees to the horizontal in the position shown in Fig. 1, on the striker 28 is set to engage a 45 degree face on the lever 37 and is rotated at the linear speed of the moving stock 1. The striker 28 engages the lever 37 and through the rod 41 pushes the carrier 9 from right to left. In this movement of the carrier a projection 55 on an arm 57 pivoted in the carrier 9 rides over a projection 56 on a stationary block 61 pivoted in a member 63 adjustably pivoted to rods 65, and causes a member 59 to close the die 6. Once over the projection 56 springs open the die 6. A spring latch 70 rises to lock behind a rod 72 on the carrier 9 and hold it at the end of its stroke against a compression spring 73. When the wheel 16 has turned through 180 degrees a cam 69 thereon engages a roller 74 on an arm 75 to rotate the arm and cause the latch 70 to be released and the carriage to be returned by the spring 73. On returning the projector 55 engages the projector 56 and rotates the block 61 against a weak spring 68.,
