Abstract

512,162. Wood, cutting or sawing. KODAK, Ltd., and GUY, H. April 1, 1938, No. 10072. [Classes 145 (i) and 145 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] In a machine having means for automatically feeding and cutting work blanks, the blank is moved towards a saw, rotary cutter or boring tool while it is clamped between a fixed and a movable jaw operated by a cam which moves bodily with the jaw operating means to maintain the clamping action until after the cutting operation has been completed, when the jaws are returned and the blank ejected. The bottom blank 11 from a pile in the hopper 48 is clamped between a fixed jaw 5 and a movable jaw 6 carried by a reciprocating table. The jaw 6 is carried on the end of a slidable rod 15 which is urged in the release direction by a spring 31 and is moved in the clamping direction by a bellcrank lever 20 and a roller 23 engaging a rocking and sliding cam 24. When the table is moved to the right, roller 23 runs up incline 26 on the cam on to the raised part 27, thus clamping the blank 11. The cam then tilts so that projection 36 therein is released from stop 34 and is engaged by projection 35 on lever 20 whereby the cam is carried along with the work table and moves between fixed guides 28. The blank 11 is thus moved into engagement with cutter 56. Upon reversal of the table to move to the left, roller 23 runs down cam incline 26 and the clamps are released, the cam then being carried to the left with the work table. When the table has moved to its extreme position, the blank 11 is ejected sideways into shoot 79 by the end of lever 62 which is pivoted at 63 to the work table and is operated by a roller 76 on the short arm engaging triangular cam surfaces 68, 69, 70 and outer, guides 72, 73, 74 carried by the frame of the machine. A finger 57 assists in holding the blank up to the cutter.
