Abstract
414,771. Cutting shavings for use in the manufacture of match boxes. SOC. INDO-CHINOISE FORESTIERE ET DES ALLUMETTES, Benthuy, Nord - Annam, France.-(Assignees of Mange, F. ; 41, Boulevard Magenta, Paris.) Jan. 11, 1933, No. 30344. Convention date, Jan. 11, 1932. Divided on 414,745. [Class 145 (i).] Shavings are cut from wooden blocks, after scoring to facilitate subsequent bending, and conveyed to a machine for making the cases or to a machine for making the drawers of match boxes. The latter machines are not described and may be of the kind described in Specifications 410,014, [Group XVII], and 414,745. The feed device comprises a fixed channel 3 and a channelled member 4 reciprocated by a cam 12 through a lever 13, Fig. 5 ; the following blocks are held up to the front block 1 by counterweights 18. Lateral jaws 5, 5, Fig. 6, are pivoted on the machine frame and actuated by a cam 17 through extension 5b of the jaw 5 and a connecting rod 16. Upper and lower jaws 6, 6a, Fig. 5, are pivotally mounted on the member 4 to move therewith, and are actuated by a cam 11 through extension 10 of jaw 6 and connecting rod 9. After a shaving has been cut from the block 1, the jaws 6, 6 open and are carried backwards by the member 4, the block being held stationary by the jaws 5, 5a. At the end of their backward movement, the jaws 6, 6 close on the block and the jaws 5, 5 open. The member 4 then moves forward, feeding the block, and at the end of this stroke the jaws 5, 5a again close. The block is thus always held by at least two jaws. Rotary scoring cutters 19, Fig. 4, driven from electric motor 21 through a flexible shaft are carried in a frame 22 reciprocated in a slideway 23 by a cam 25 through lever 24. The cutters are reciprocated to score the face of the block and returned to their initial position before a shaving is cut off. The support 23 is adjustable to vary the depth of the grooves made by the cutters 19. After the scoring, a shaving is cut off by a knife 27 reciprocated in a guide 28 by pin and slot mechanism 29, 30. The shaving is received and conveyed to the machine for making cases or drawers by a pneumatic conveyer 32 having orifices 316 and connected to a suction tube 317, Fig. 7. The conveyer 32 is slidably mounted in a slideway 45 keyed to a shaft 309, Fig. 6, about which it and the conveyer are oscillated by a lever 40, connecting rod 39, pivoted lever 38 and cam 37. The conveyer 32 carries a roller 312 guided in a sector 44 which is normally coaxial with the shaft 309. The sector 44 is keyed to a shaft 315 about which it is oscillated by lever 314, connecting rod 43, pivoted lever 42 and cam 41. The free end of the sector 44 is thus moved closer to or further from the shaft 309 and the conveyer 32 caused to move in the slideway 45. The combined effect of the cams 37, 41 thus imparts the required movement to the conveyer 32. The last few shavings cut from a block and the first few cut from the following block are found to be unsatisfactory, and provision is made as follows for stopping the movement of the conveyer 32 and for stopping the machine for making the cases or drawers while such shavings are being cut. A contact finger 46, Fig. 4, is carried by a pivoted lever 49 connected to a rod 48 which carries at its lower end a roller coacting with a cam 47, the rod 48 being returned downwards by a spring 50. The rod 48 and contact finger 46 are thus raised and lowered at each revolution of the cam 47. Downward movement of the finger 46 is limited by its engagement with the upper face of the block, and is normally insufficient to close a switch 51 which is operated by an extension of the lever 49. Each of the blocks is provided at its rear end with a notch 2, Fig. 7, and when the finger 46 first enters this notch 2 its extra displacement closes the switch 51 effecting the energizing of an electromagnet 52. The closing of the switch 51 also effects the closing of a supplementary electric circuit which, so long as it remains closed, supplies current to the electromagnet 52. This circuit when once closed is not affected by the continued opening and closing of the switch 51 which takes place at each revolution of the cam 47. The inward displacement of the core 53, Fig. 6, of the electromagnet effects, through a lever 55, the disengagement of a driven clutch plate 54 from a plate 56, through which the drive for the movements of the conveyer 32 and for the machine for making cases or drawers is effected. A brake 57 carried by the lever 55 holds the plate 56 stationary, the conveyer 32 and machine for making cases or drawers being then inoperative. The member 4 and knife 27 continue to reciprocate, and the unsatisfactory shavings then produced are removed from the machine by any known means, as e.g. by a suction device for the removal of saw-dust. The time during which the supplementary circuit remains closed can be regulated by clockwork mechanism of well-known kind and is predetermined so that the conveyer and the machine for making cases or drawers are inoperative so long as unsatisfactory shavings are being cut. At the end of this period the supplementary circuit is automatically opened and the plate 54 is returned by a spring into clutching engagement with the plate 56 so that the parts that were previously stopped are now restarted, and the cycle of operations recommences under the control of the switch 51.
