Abstract
702,782. Burners for gaseous, liquid, and solid fuels. LUMMUS CO. July 3, 1951, No. 15748/51. Class 75 (1) A fuel burner for gaseous, liquid and solid fuels comprises a tuyere 40 of circular cross section which has a solid wall at one end and is open at the other end and has circumferentially spaced tangential air inlet slots in its side wall, air being passed axially through a chamber 42 surrounding the tuyere 40 to pass through the said slots and form a rotating hollow column adjacent the side wall of the tuyere, said column discharging into one end of a combustion chamber 48 which is open at the other end, and fuel is introduced into the air column to form a combustible mixture by means of a device, e.g. a liquid-fuel atomizing nozzle 47, adjacent the open end of the tuyere, said combustion chamber 48 being of such size and configuration, e.g. having an inner side wall defined by a surface of revolution and disposed coaxially with the tuyere and having throughout its length a diameter greater than that of the tuyere outlet, whereby whirls of flame gases are formed within the burning rotating mass for stabilizing the flame against extinction and completing combustion in a relativelv short distance from the tuyere. The open end of the tuyere 40 preferably has a diameter from 0.25 to 0.67 times the diameter of the combustion chamber 48. A face plate 45 surrounds the open end of the tuyere 40 and is perforated for the passage of cooling air and provided with a radiation shield 45a. Specifications 686,749 and 686,792 are referred to.
