Class 125 (2) Apparatus for applying caps to bottles comprises a pillar 3 carrying on a fixed radial arm 5, a cap magazine 13 and on a slider 7, a capping head 8 rotatably mounted by a shaft 18 in a bearing 19, the shaft having a gear 17 which, when the slider is raised or lowered runs on a rack 16 to rotate the head through 180 degrees) from cap-applying :position to cap-receiving position as it rises and in the reverse direction as it descends. The rack 16 is carried on a rod 15 slidable in a boss 14 on arm 5 and during the first part of the rising motion, the rack rises with the head 8 to compress a spring 22 and then the head rotates when the spring is fully loaded. During descent of the head 8, the rack moves with the head to compress a spring 23 until it is fully loaded and then the head is rotated. The slider is moved either mechanically or by a handle 9 pivoted at 10 to the slider and having an extension 11 pivoted to a lever 12 pivoted to the arm 5 at 6, a toggle action being provided. The slider 7 carries a spring-loaded catch 36 which, during rising movement lifts a piston rod 30, 32 against a spring 31, the piston working in a pneumatic cylinder 28. At the top of the stroke the catch is engaged by a pawl 42 co-operating with a hook 41 on the catch. At the start of the descent, the catch is withdrawn by the pawl and spring 31 forces down the piston to create suction in cylinder 28 which is transmitted by pipe 29 to the head 8 so that the cap is held within the head. the suction being broken at an appropriate moment during the capping operation. A bottle guide 43 is provided. The head 8 may be constructed as described in Specification 702,705.
