Abstract
701,930. Automatic steering systems. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd. April 15, 1952 [April 26, 1951], No. 9749/51. Class 38 (4) As shown, a pendulum producing electrical signals in accordance with deviations from vertical and associated with an aircraft automatic pilot as described in Specification 611,037, has a bob attached to a rod 3 pivoted at 2 to move freely between positions limited by stops 14, 15. The bob is so formed as to eliminate the tendency of the pendulum to oscillate between the stops due to vibration of the structure on which it is mounted and comprises an outer cylinder 5, having end caps 12, 13, attached to rod 3, and an inner cylinder 6 located between caps 10, 11 held against annular seatings 7 on cylinder 5 by a spring 9. If one of the caps 12 or 13 strikes a stop 14 or 15 and cylinder 5 has its momentum reversed, cylinder 6 by extending spring 9 still continues to move in the original direction until it strikes the inside of cap 12 or 13. The mass of cylinder 6 is made slightly less than that of cylinder 5 so that the last mentioned collision reduces the total momentum substantially to zero.
