Abstract
701,358. Toy shios. CHRISTENSEN, N. J., and OLSEN, P. F. A. A. June 17, 1952 [Feb. 2, 1952], No. 15191/52. Class' 132(3) The hull of a toy "sinking" ship is provided with one or more relatively fineopenings for the inflow of water, at least one of the openings being situated below the normal waterline, and the hull containing a number of buoyancy compartments or air spaces. A hull 1 contains four compartments 2-5 closed by a deck 6. Compartments 2, 3, 4 are connected in series by openings 8, 9, opening 7 is below the waterline, and opening 10 is in the deck above compartment 4. Water first flows in through opening 7 to flood compartment 2 and the ship lists to port. Compartments 3. 4 are then flooded in turn through openings 8, 9 and the ship sinks by the stern. As compartment 4 floods, the ship sinks still more until finally only the bows are held up by the entirely sealed compartment 5. During the flooding, air flows out through the opening 10. Draining openings 15, 16, 17 are provided with closing devices. Floats, e.g. of cork, may be used in place of or in addition to the air spaces.
