Abstract

Class 38(5) [Also in Group XXXVI] A socket connector includes a switch in series with each " live" contact and operated by the insertion and withdrawal of a plug. In Figs. 6 and 8 each " live " contact 11 comprises a resilient U- shaped strip anchored to the socket base 10 by a rivet 16 which also anchors a resilient switch arm 17<SP>1</SP> carrying a contact 17<SP>4</SP> at its outer end cooperating with a fixed contact 19<SP>1</SP> anchored to a terminal 18. The switches are normally biased to the open position and on insertion of a plug, the " live " pins 30 flex the jaws 11<SP>1</SP> of contacts 11 outwards so that they engage protuberances 17<SP>3</SP> on the arms 17<SP>1</SP> thereby flexing the latter and closing the switches. Withdrawal of the plug causes the switches to spring open. Indicating means, such as a lamp 24 connected across the contacts 11, may be provided to indicate when the contacts are " alive ". Alternatively, the indicating means may comprise the words " on ", " off " carried by a spring-biased shutter 20, Fig. 4, sliding on the rear of a cover plate 13 for the socket and operated by the earth pin 31, said words appearing opposite an aperture 24 according to whether the plug is inserted or withdrawn. Fig. 12 shows a modification wherein the switches are closed by projections 20<SP>2</SP> on the shutter 20 instead of the protuberances 17<SP>3</SP>. The socket connector may include the usual manually operated switch in addition to the aforementioned switches. In the latter case the manually operated switch is in series with one of the aforementioned switches, a pair of contacts being provided for each switch.
