Class 59 A machine for reducing vegetable matter or other material to a finely divided condition comprises an endless abrasive band c passing over rotary pulleys a, b, the material to be reduced being fed from a hopper i to the gap between the pulley b and a feed roller h. The pulley a is preferably made smaller than the pulley b to facilitate the detachment of finely-divided material adhering to the band, this material being carried towards a collecting roller d from which it is removed by a scraper k. Alternatively the finely-divided material may be detached from the band by means, e.g. a suction fan or a nozzle, arranged adjacent to the underside of the band. The bamd is tensioned by mounting the pulley a and roller d on a slide e which is loaded by means of a weight g or a spring.
