Abstract

699,407. Container closures. METAL BOX CO., Ltd., STEPHENS, W. A., and EVANS, - A. J. P. Feb. 5, 1951 [April 24, 1950; Sept. 22, 1950], Nos. 10096/50 and 23319/50. Class 125(iii) A closure for a jam jar or like container having a bulge 8 beneath which the lower part of the skirt of the cap is engaged, is formed of thin gauge non- resilient sheet metal (0.006-0.014 inch.) such as aluminium the skirt 2 having an endless series of spaced triangular slots 1 forming straight fingers 4 curled at their tips 6, the closed ends of the slots being arranged so as to be on or just above the major diameter 7 of the bulge when the cap is applied to the container, and the bases of the triangular slots being 1/5th-1/6th of the width of the free ends of the fingers. The cap may be a snap-on cap with indentations in the top surface 10 to permit " breathing ", or a vacuum cap with a channel 11 into which is poured sealing composition 9. The cap may be applied to the container by a closuring machine comprising a bracelet of coil spring forced inwards by a conical wedge member to force the fingers 4 inwards.
