Abstract
697,762. Respiratory appliances. HIGGS, G. W. March 17, 1952 [July 5, 1951], No. 16014/51. Class 81 (ii). A disposable mask, for oxygen administration, is made in the form of a bag of flexible gasproof material, such as polyethylene, and has a deformable wire in the upper edge, to fit the face, and provision for supply and exhaust of gas. In its simplest form the mask is made from two sheets 36, 37 of gasproof material secured around their edges to form a bag, the lower edge of the bag is provided with a shori tube 38 for connection to a ga; supply and the upper edge is turned over to form a channel 33 On the upper side of the bag this channel encloses an aluminium wire or bar 34 and on the lower side it encloses an elastic cord 35 which, at each side, passes through a loop at the end of the wire 34 and then out through holes in the bag material. In use the wire is shaped to fit over the wearer's nose and cheeks, the lower edge of the bag is passed under the chin and the outer part of the elastic loop is passed around the back of the head. An orifice 39 serves for exhalation to the atmosphere. In another form the mask is formed as two bags, one within the other (see Fig. 2, not shown). In this, an aperture in the inner bag communicates with the outer bag for the admission of gas.
