Abstract

Hollow pellets of alumina, mullite, kyanite, forsterite, clay or kaolin are formed by coating a combustible core e.g. dextrose, starch, resins or lignone with the appropriate finely divided material and firing and sintering (see Group V).ALSO:Hollow refractory pellets of wall thickness between 5 and 30 thousandths of an inch and of a size passing through a screen of 5 mesh U.S. standard are prepared by coating globules of combustible material with finely divided refractory material, forming a shell thereon, firing the globule to burn out the combustible material and to sinter the refractory material. Preferred refractory materials are mullite, kyanite, alumina, forsterite, clay, kaolin grog or clay grog. The combustible material may be a "filled" Lignore solution, i.e. dry Lignore incorporated in a concentrated solution thereof, dextrose, starch or resins, and finely divided combustibles may be added to such solutions, e.g. wood flour, nut shells, sugar cane or pith. A cellular insulating body may be produced from the globules or the pellets. When using globules they are moulded and then fired. When pellets are used they are mixed with a binder, e.g. refractory clay plus sodium silicate or a calcium aluminate cement, moulded, and the shaped body refired, if required. A bond for the pellets may be of the same material as the pellets themselves.
