Abstract

In a process for making kiln furniture such as saggers, reinforcement rods of fired refractory ceramics (e.g. a high grade alumina or porcelain), which may be formed by extrusion and bent or serrated, are inserted into a mould and the mould filled with a mixture, which may be dry and pressed in the mould or which may be in the form of a paste or slurry which sets to the shape of the mould, the shaped article being finally fired. In making a sagger in the form of an open-topped rectangular box a slurry is used comprising 18.75 per cent sillimanite +20 mesh, 18.75 per cent sillimanite -20 mesh, 31.25 per cent of fused alumina -100+200 mesh, and 31.25 per cent of fused alumina -325 mesh, to which is added a mixture of 10 parts methylated spirit, 1 part of water and 20 parts ethyl silicate in the proportions of 930 cubic centimeters to each 5 kilograms of dry mix. This slurry is poured into a mould, in which fired ceramic reinforcement rods are placed in position so that they are embedded in the walls and base of the sagger, the mix is allowed to set, the article removed from the mould, dried and finally fired.
