Abstract

697,076. Automatic firearms. AKTIEBOLAGET BOFORS. March 3, 1952 [March 5, 1951], No. 5507/52. Class 92(ii) Relates to automatic firearms, such as that described in Specification 653,648 having a short barrel recoil and having latches on the breech-block 19 for locking it in the firing position, there being a releasing member 8<SP>1</SP> pivoted to the barrel 1 and adapted to strike a fixed abutment 53 during recoil. Such action causes the member 8<SP>1</SP> to swing about its pivot 9 to entrain a sliding member 37 provided with cam surfaces which release the locking latches and impart a rearward movement to the breech-block. According to the invention a safety element 61 is provided which, in one position, limits the movement of the member 8<SP>1</SP> so that the latter prevents' the striker 35 in the breech-block from functioning. The element 61 shown slides' in a casing and is urged forwardly by an internal spring 63. In front of the element' is an electro-magnet 65, having a core 66, winding 67, and a movable armature 68, the latter being connected to a centrally pivoted link' 71 whose other end is connected to a slidably mounted bar 76. In the position shown the bar 76 engages the element 61, and the latter is held retracted' against the action of its spring 63 in such a position that the member 8<SP>1</SP> is free to' operate. On closing the circuit to the electromagnet, the armature 68 moves downwards to lift the bar 76 thus freeing the element 61 which then moves forwards under the action of spring 63 to bring a cam surface 60 thereon beneath the arm 8 of member 8<SP>1</SP>. The latter is thus rocked and prevents the striker from moving to the firing position.
