Abstract

A grease composition comprises a mineral lubricating oil, a calcium fatty acid soap and from 0.5 to 5 per cent by weight of a water-soluble, oil-insoluble derivative of cellulose. The cellulose derivative raises the dropping point of the grease and also the temperature at which syneresis occurs. Suitable cellulose derivatives include methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl, propyl and carboxymethyl cellulose, and the preferred content is about 2 per cent by weight. The mineral oil may have a viscosity of 40 to 70 S.S.U., particularly 55 S.S.U., at 210 DEG F. The calcium soap may be prepared from hydrogenated fish oil acids, stearic acid, oleic acid, hydroxystearic acid, beef fat, tallow and saturated or unsaturated glycerides of various fatty acids. Such saponifiable material may be saponified directly with Ca(OH)2 or CaO, and this can be done after the fatty material has been mixed with the mineral oil and cellulose derivative. Further mineral oil may be added after saponification to give the desired composition. Alternatively a preformed calcium soap may be used. The greases usually contain from 10 to 50 per cent by weight of the calcium soap, and preferably from 15 to 25 per cent. Minor proportions of acidic materials such as sulphuric, ethane sulphonic or acetic acid may also be included. Examples are given.
