Abstract

695,128. Wrenches. RUDMAN, R. R. Sept. 24, 1951 [Sept. 23, 1950], No. 23364/50. Class 61 (iii). In a geared, ratchet wrench, the gearing transmits the applied power to a segment or quadrant capable of being rocked in either direction through the gearing and carrying the pawl of the ratchet mechanism. As shown the wrench has a frame comprising two side plates 1 spaced apart by a distance piece 2 and provided with a steadying handle 3. A spur wheel 4 is mounted in the upper part of the frame on a shaft having a shaped end 5 to which torque is applied by a spanner or other tool. The wheel 4 gears with a toothed segment 6 loosely mounted on a shaft 7 which carries or forms part of a ratchet wheel 8 and has projecting portions 9 for engagement with or connection to the nut or the like to be turned. A double toothed pawl 10 mounted on the segment has a handle 11 by which it is turned to bring one or other of the teeth into engagement with the ratchet wheel 8. The pawl is held in position by a spring and ball device (not shown). Four screws 15 are provided to steady the frame. The screws may be replaced by one or more adjustable, pivoted brackets or legs.
