Abstract

692,637. Treating yarns. ADSHEAD & GEESON, Ltd.. and GEESON. T. Nov. 14, 1951 [Nov. 15, 1950], No. 27878/50. Addition to 683,075, [Group VIII], Class 120(iii) Yarns, in the form of stapled yarn or continuous filaments, made from nylon or other synthetic linear polyamide or from mixtures thereof with other fibres whether synthetic or natural, are subjected to the process to which fabrics are described as being subjected in the parent Specification. Thus, the yarn is passed continuously or intermittently through steam, which may be superheated or not according' to the temperature and amount of moisture desired to obtain extensibility of the yarn, then through hot dry air to remove the moisture from the yarn, and finally over and in contact with a hot surface heated to a temperature of 300‹F or higher but below the melting point of the polyamide to cause the yarn to retract or shrink to a predetermined amount and be stabilized in such dimensional condition. Apparatus for carrying out the process may comprise a steam head over which the yarn is drawn, and a heated chamber arranged above the head to form an air gap therebetween, the outer surface of the wall of the chamber forming the heated surface with which the yarn is brought into contact: it may be arranged in similar manner to the apparatus described in the parent Specification.
