Wood mouldings are made by first cutting rebated flat marginal faces 19 on one face of a length of rough sawn wood W (see Fig. 3) so that the two true planed surfaces thus resulting engage guides 10 on the machine table 1, and then (Fig. 4) rebating the side faces to form surfaces 21 engaging the guides 11, by means of a rotating cutter 5, and with the wood positioned by the guides 12, 13 planing the wood to the required profile. As described and illustrated, the work is thus planed on the side faces (see Fig. 5) down to the bottom of the rebates' 21 by cutters 6, 7. A further cutter is employed to remove the rough portion of the wood between the original rebates 19. Any desired profile can be moulded, and after the rebates 19 are cut away the resultant plane surface of the wood slides over a flat pad between the side guides which holds it true during subsequent profiling operations. The method can be practised on a machine described in the specification in which case the initial rebates (19) are worked on a normal planing machine with a suitably shaped cutter and then transferred to the machine, the table of which is laid out as shown in Fig. 1. The various cutters are arranged in the gaps 2, 3, 4. Alternatively the multicutter machines may have a planing cutter arranged ahead of the guides 1 to work the initial rebates.
