Abstract

690,578. Suction apparatus of paper-making machines. HEYS, R. C. Aug. 15, 1951. [Sept. 30, 1950] No. 23963/50. Class 96. A suction box 3 of a Fourdrinier papermaking machine has an extension 5 with a depending partition or baffle 4 e.g. under the dead-plate 6, to facilitate separation of liquid from air withdrawn from the web by the suction box. A perforated cone 14 in the suction pipe 13 may effect further separation. The down-pipe 16 may lead to a common suction header 18, a pipe 20 and a pump (not shown), the header 18 &c. being cast in one piece with a common water-header 10. Hand-operated valves 7 and 17 control the water and air pipes, and pipes 12 and 20 are interconnected to balance the suction. In a modification, a throttle valve in the water outlet is operated automatically in accordance with suction variations in the suction box as disclosed in Specification 623,492.
