Abstract

690,508. Coating cables &c. by extrusion. WARD & GOLDSTONE, Ltd., and GOLDSTONE, S. Oct. 25, 1951 [Oct. 31, 1950], No. 26491/50. Class 87 (ii). Apparatus for producing on a wire an insulating covering comprising a continuous sheath of solid insulant having inlaid in the surface thereof contrasting longitudinal bands of homogeneous material, consists of a main extruding machine 1 and a single subsidiary extruder 10 from which the band-forming material is delivered to the die head 3 of the main extruder, and passes into the main die through a number of jets 13 spaced angularly therearound. The basic insulating covering B is applied to the conductor A during its passage through the die 3. A spigot head 4 at the outlet end of the die is engaged by a cap 5 having a socket 6 into which is screwed nozzle 7 mounted in the die 9 of the subsidiary extruder 10. Socket .6 communicates with a circumferential groove 12 in the spigot 4 and two jets 13 from this groove open into the bore of die 3 at diametrically-opposed positions. The material from the subsidiary extruder thus forms two integral contrasting bands C in the covering B.
