Abstract

689,129. Casting composite articles. FAIRCHILD ENGINE & AIRPLANE CORPORATION. Nov. 9, 1950 [Nov. 10, 1949], No. 27437/50. Class 83 (i). [Also in Group XXVI] A light-metal piston 11 having a ferrous metal bearing-ring 10 (see Group XXVI), bonded thereto, is made by first immersing the ring 10 which is of steel containing 12.5 per cent nickel in a bath of molten aluminium so as to provide a thin coating 13 of molten ferrousaluminium alloy, inserting in a piston mould whilst the film 13 is molten and casting the piston body so that fusion of the ring 10 and the body occurs through the medium of the film 13 which, when cold, is of sufficient strength to resist thermal expansion strains. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 599,684.
