Abstract

689,044. Grinding cylindrical surfaces. SPICER, V. Dec. 24, 1951, No. 3569/50. Class 60. A device for grinding, polishing or honing journals comprises a spring-pressed grinding pad h<SP>2</SP> and a plurality of radially-directed rollers e supported by a split ring a that surrounds the journal, the rollers co-operating with the journal directly or indirectly. The pad h<SP>2</SP> is carried by a shoe h<SP>1</SP> that can be adjusted by a screw h<SP>3</SP> provided with a flat for engagement by a locking screw h<SP>5</SP>. The rollers e are mounted in pairs on trunnions d<SP>1</SP> engaged by adjusting screws c. Springs f press the rollers towards the centre of the ring a which is clamped between plates a<SP>1</SP> and may be driven by a belt engaging the ring, or by a flexible drive and gearing. The rollers e may run on split rings i, Fig. 4, clamped to the crank pin j of a crank shaft k instead of on the pin itself during grinding thereof.
