Abstract
<PICT:0688076/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0688076/IV (c)/2> In a washing-machine of the kind in which a drum 10 is mounted for rotation about a fixed axis, at least one end of the drum 10 is provided with a compartment 25 which communicates with an external discharge (or supply) pipe 27 by way of a hollow axial neck 12a, radial or other webs 29 dividing the compartment 25 into V-shaped pockets 25a open to the work chamber 18 of the drum adjacent its periphery by way of perforated lifters 20. In the construction shown, the drum 10 is mounted in a fixed casing 19. In operation, during rinsing, the rotary element 39 of a valve 38 is set so that a connection 43 to the casing 19 is closed and the pipe 27 is connected to a drain pipe 42. Liquid in the casing 19 is carried through slots 22 into the drum 10 by scoops 23 carried by perforated auxiliary lifters 21. The liquid passes into perforated main lifters 20 which open into a respective pocket 25a, and is lifted by one of the webs 29 to the outlet through the trunnion 12a. For washing the valve 38 is set (as shown) to connect the pipes 27 and 43 and close the pipe 42 so that liquid circulates between the casing 19 and drum 10. For draining, the valve 38 is set so as to connect both pipes 27 and 43 with the drain pipe 42. The valve is operated through bevel-gearing and shafting, Fig. 5 (not shown), by a handle at the front of the machine. A clothes loading door 35 has a window 36. A further window is provided at 37. In a modification, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), the drum 10 has bearings at both ends and is "side loading." The door of the drum operates radially and may carry one of the auxiliary lifters 21. The door of the casing slides peripherally. The webs 29 may be of volute shape, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown). The lifters 20 may then be axially inclined and perforated on the leading side (when the rotation of the drum is unidirectional). The imperforate side has a curved extension in the compartment 25, Fig. 9 (not shown). The drum 10 may be divided into two work chambers 18 having a respective compartment 25 and hollow trunnion 12a. In another modification (not shown), inlet is through one hollow trunnion, to associated compartment 25 and certain of the lifters, while outlet is via the remaining lifters and a compartment 25 and trunnion at the other end of the drum. This enables the casing 19 and scoops 23 to be eliminated. The valve 38 may be replaced by separate valves of the full-bore quick-acting type, which may be interconnected and automatically controlled in conjunction with liquid admission valves. The drum 19 may be supported and driven at its periphery, but according to the Provisional Specification it may be supported by a trunnion at one end and by its periphery at the other. The pipe 42 may be connected to a filter and storage tank.ALSO:<PICT:0688076/III/1> In a dry-cleaning machine of the kind in which a drum 10 is mounted for rotation about a fixed axis, at least one end of the drum 10 is provided with a compartment 25 which communicates with an external discharge (or supply) pipe 27 by way of a hollow axial neck 12a, radial or other webs 29 dividing the compartment 25 into V-shaped pockets 25a open to the work chamber 18 of the drum adjacent its periphery by way of perforated lifters 20. The pipe 42 may be connected to a filter and storage tank.
