Abstract

687,665. Vehicle fittings for loading. ALLUM, C. E. T., WILSON, C. T., PAGE, E. W., and WEBB, W. C. Jan. 4, 1951.. [Nov. 22, 1949] No. 29896/49. Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (iv). A pair of power operated lifting arms pivoted to a refuse collecting vehicle lift a container above a discharge opening in the roof of the vehicle and the hinged bottom of the container is then opened. The vehicle 12 has rearwardly extending arms 16 raised by rams 18. The arms are pivoted to the vehicle at 17 and the rams at 19. The vehicle has an opening 15 closed by a flap 42, 45 hinged at 43, 44. The arms 16 have a cross bar 21 having two brackets 22, 23, the bracket 22 being foldable onto the bracket 23. The bracket 22 has a corrugated metal surface and dependent fastenings for engaging hooks 32 on the container 25. The arms 16 are limited in their upward movement by a rod 60 slidable in a guide pivoted to an operating lever 57 secured to a reversing valve 56. The rod has a lug 63 which engages a lug 64 on the arms and operates the valve to stop operating the ram. The member 49 on the arm engages the flap to raise it and to invert the container over the opening for dust free delivery. The container 25 has lugs which are engaged by rollers 41 on the vehicle to release the latch 34 of the bottom 33<SP>1</SP>. On lowering the container horns 52 engage the bottom closure and a roller 50 guides until the latch is secured. To discharge the vehicle, a barrier 13 is raised. The barrier has arms 76 which have rollers 74 which can be extended into the path of the arms 16 by operating a handle 77. A cam 80 on the arms engages the rollers and lifts the barrier, initially an arm 65 secured to the barrier slides in a slot 66 and then acts as a pivot. Movement is limited by a lug 84 on a rod 8 1 which engages a cam on the arm 65. The rod is pivoted to the valve lever and moves it to neutral position. For this operation lugs 86 for the flap are pivoted inwards and the bracket 22 is folded onto the bracket 23. For hand loading a rear panel 51 hinged to the barrier 13 is removed and the step 26 of the bracket 22 brought to the required height for hand loading. The vehicle is provided with a movable floor.
