687,072. Moulding nylon fabric into threedimensional articles. BROCKLEHURST-WHISTON AMALGAMATED, Ltd., HULME, T. H. W., and CASTLE, V. Jan. 15, 1951 [Feb. 21, 1950; April 13, 1950], Nos. 4468/50 and 9163/50. Class 87 (ii). In a method for the manufacture of shaped articles of woven or knitted material made from yarns of nylon the fabric which is to receive a permanent three-dimensional form is subjected to gradually, and uniformly increasing pressure from a heated former at a temperature high enough to permit the material to take a permanent set but not high enough to injure the fabric. The appropriate temperature range is 200‹-220‹ C., and the yarns are then extended to form the shape of the article required and become permanently set. The time required is up to one minute. The fabric to be shaped is clamped between two plates 12, 13 which have holes 14, located exactly opposite by dowels 16, to permit the formers 15 to pass through them. The formers are of solid aluminium, cylindrical and domed at their ends for articles such as brassieres and filter caps. They may be heated electrically by cartridge type elements inserted in them. The formers are mounted on a plate 20 which is moved by hydraulic pressure applied to pistons 23 in cylinders 25, their upward travel being regulated by collars 30 on columns 19 on which the plate 20 is guided and which support the clamping device. The pressure is controlled by a lever 29 which operates valves 27, 28. The clamping plates may be faced with leather to prevent the fabric from slipping, and the edges of the holes should be bevelled to prevent nipping of the fabric. By placing several layers of fabric on the machine several mouldings may be made simultaneously. The first Provisional Specification mentions that the material may be provided with hems of another material and with ties or other fastening devices.
