Abstract

686,390. Knitting-machines. MELLOR BROMLEY & CO., Ltd., and SHORTLAND, A. Dec. 8, 1950. [Dec. 8, 1949] No. 31465/49. Class 74 (ii). In a knitting-machine, means is provided for varying the circumferential spacing apart of two followers displaceable by cam means to move a member to and fro. During splicing, the needles 1 are. located closer to the sinker body, to increase the loop length, by lobes 24a, 24b of a cam on the main cam shaft 3, acting on the quality shaft 19, through trucks 23a, 23b, the distance apart of which, circumferentially of the cam, can be varied, to vary the duration of and the interval between the periods of longer loop formation. The trucks 23a 23b are borne on shoes 27a, 27b slidable along dovetail- or T-section arcuate guides 26a, 26b on the truck lever 22, by means of quadrants of teeth 28a, 28b on the shoes and worms 29a, 29b on the truck lever 22, and geared together by gears 30a, 30b, one worm 29a being connected by a flexible shaft 31 with the splicing stop screw 13. The truck lever is connected to the quality shaft 19 through linkwork including a two-part connecting rod 40 which may be rendered ineffective by pattern-controlled relative rotation of one part 44 thereof to move the pins 46 on the other part from the position shown into the longitudinal arms 45<SP>1</SP> of diametrically disposed L-shaped slots 45. The trucks are adjustable towards and away from the cam shaft by adjustment of pivoted truckcradles 35b. The upper end of the truck lever works in a slot to eliminate lateral play. The normal rocking of the quality shaft is by a rod 20, actuated by a patterning device 21. The invention may be used to vary the dwell of a yard feeder (e.g. splicing-feeder) in feeding or non-feeding position in a circular machine ; or to vary the dwell or timing of the dwell of a movable cam (e.g. a switch cam or bolt cam) in one or other of two positions between which the cam is movable..
