Abstract

In a process for digesting straw or similar vegetable material in a solution or suspension of lime such as lime water or lime milk substantially at or below atmospheric pressure and at a temperature not substantially exceeding 100 DEG C., the waste lime lye obtained after completion of the digestion is utilized, together with water and fresh lime, as a digestion liquid for the digestion of new quantities of straw or similar vegetable material. The amount of lye re-used may be about 30-50 per cent of the water freshly added. Preferably the lime is added in successive portions during the process. The lye may circulate through the digester in either direction. For each kilogram of straw treated, 2-4 kg. of lye from a preceding digestion, 6-8 kg. fresh water and 100 g. CaO may be used. The time of treatment is from 1.5 to 3 hours and the preferred temperature between 95 and 100 DEG C. The resulting pulp may be washed and/or treated further. In an example, 100 kg. of cut straw (calculated as air dry) is introduced into a digester and 400 kg. of lye from a preceding digestion and 800 kg. fresh water are supplied at 80 DEG C. The liquor is pumped from the bottom to the top of the digester, and is heated to 95 DEG C. 10 kg. lime (calculated as CaO) is added as a lime cream and the temperature raised to 100 DEG C. After the addition of the lime, the temperature is maintained at 95-100 DEG C. for an hour to complete the digestion. Specification 671,251 is referred to.
