312,634. Euromerican Cellulose Products Corporation, (Assignees oi Dorner, B.). May 29, 1928, [Convention date]. Pulp, preparation of. - In a process for the preparation of cellulose, suitable for producing paper, artificial silk, and other cellulose products, from cornstalks, straw, and the like, the material is first finely shredded, leached with water, beaten, washed and screened, all as described in Specifications 283,851 and 286,211. The second stage comprises treatment with dilute alkali of less than 1 per cent strength, and washing, which removes silica and complex silicates, and generally acts as a more thorough washing operation. The third stage comprises another treatment with dilute alkali of not over 2 per cent strength by which the non-cellulosic material is dissolved. In the alkali treatments caramelization of the non- cellulosic material is avoided and the pentosans and similar materials are recovered in a form usable as stock food and for producing alcohol commercially. The leach liquor and alkali liquors obtained may be treated according to the process described in Specification 286,210, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.].
