Abstract

685,282. Stuffing-box substitutes. SHELL REFINING & MARKETING CO., Ltd. April 27, 1951, No. 9869/51. Class 122(v) A sealing device for a rotary shaft 5 passing through a partition 1 such as a gas-tight bulkhead of a ship comprises a housing 4 surrounding the shaft, a collar 6 secured to the shaft, a pair of sealing rings 8, 9 supported in an axially free but angularly fixed manner on each side of the collar and resiliently urged into sealing contact therewith, the rings being each secured to the housing by flexible bellows 10, 11 surrounding the shaft, and the chamber defined by the housing 4, the bellows 10. 11, the rings 8, 9 and the collar 6 being filled with a sealing liquid, Radial projections 17 on the sealing rings engage axial slots 16 in cylindrical extensions 14, 15 of end plates 12, 13 secured to the housing 4 which latter is filled with oil 31 through a plug 27. The sealing rings have oil passages 22 therein and are urged into rubbing sealing contact with the collar 6 by springs 18 mounted on plugs 19 threaded into the end plates 12, 13.
