Abstract
683,146. Electric resistance furnaces. SIMS, C. W., ELLIS, C. C., and WILDBARFIELD ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd. Feb. 9, 1951 [Feb. 28, 1950], No. 5120/50 Class 39(iii) A furnace with heating elements a of silicon carbide or similar non-metallic material the resistance of which increases rapidly with age has a switch for periodically connecting the elements selectively in a succession of series parallel arrangements, whereby the total resistance of the furnace heater remains substantially constant as the resistance of each element increases with use. Where twelve silicon carbide resistances are used, they are connected successively in two parallel groups of six in series, four parallel groups of three in series, three parallel groups of four in series and six parallel groups of two in series. A ballast resistor 4 is connected in series with the heater network, and at each stage the junctions between the elements which are nominally at the same potential are joined by equalizing connections. The elements a may be connected as shown to a rotary switch B, or they may be connected to a terminal board to which a series of link boards is selectively applied to connect the elements in the desired series-parallel arrangement.
