Abstract

A refractory composition comprises thorium oxide with 1 to 10 per cent by weight of an oxide of another metal of Group IV (a) of the Periodic Table. A chemically equivalent amount of a compound which on firing produces the oxide may be used. Preferred compositions employ titania or zirconia and for the zirconia the preferred maximum is 5 per cent. A temporary binder e.g. soluble starch is used to shape the mixture before firing.
