Abstract
682,524. Heat insulation. STEWARTS & LLOYDS, Ltd. Jan. 1, 1951 [Jan. 5, 1950], No. 287/50. Class 64 (ii) [Also in Group XXVIII] In a thermally-insulated pipe system, e.g. for conveyinghot waterorsteam underground in district heating systems, one or more fluidconveying pipes b are supported, by spacers c, d embracing the inner pipe or pipes, in an enclosing pipe a, caps f of thermally-insulating material being inserted between the spacers and tne outer pipe. The space between the pipes a, b is filled with granular cork or cellular siliceous material. As shown, each spacer comprises two bosses c connected by webs d and having bores lined with bearing metal, such as zinc, or containing bearing balls or rollers g for supporting the pipes b and allowing for their axial expansion and contraction. A pair of short radial arms e extending from each boss fit in the insulating caps f. The ends of the inner pipes b project, Fig. 1, from the ends of each outer pipe a and are welded in situ to the ends of the next pipe lengths. A metal sleeve h fitted with'rubber sealing rings i encloses the gap between successive outer tubes a, the ends of which are closed by plugs m, and the pipes b are covered with insulation at these locations. Bolts j inserted through collars k secured to the pipes a hold the sleeve h in position. The components may be pre-assembled in a factory. The outer pipe a is coated with bitumen.
