Abstract

679,280. Automatic couplings. NATIONAL MALLEABLE & STEEL CASTINGS CO. May 24, 1950 [June 8, 1949], No. 13008/50. Class 103(v) A rigid jawed coupler head comprises a lock which reciprocates in a cavity to assume a locking position and an unlocking position, a pivotally mounted lock thrower, an anti-creep mechanism movable into the path of the lock and a lock-set member movable by the lock thrower to move the anti-creep mechanism out of said path. As shown a lock 20 is mounted for rotation about projections 32 on the bottom wall 34. A gear tooth 36 formed on the lock engages a slot between lugs 32 and acts as a guide. An anti-creep element 28 is rotatably mounted on a pin 46 carried by the head 12 a counterweight 58 thereon tending to maintain a portion 56 of the element engaged with a lug 52 on the lock which is thereby held in the coupled position shown in Fig. 6. A rotor lever 22 rotatably held in the coupler head 12, Fig. 4, by a bolt 44, carries a lock thrower 24. The lock 20 is rotated rearwardly for uncoupling or lock setting by the engagement of a surface 42 thereon and a cam surface 41 on the thrower 24. A lock-set member 26 has a slot 48 engaging the pin 46, a counterweight 54 tending to rotate the member from the lock-set position shown in Fig. 10, a projection 50 for engaging the lock and buffing jaw of a mating coupler, a lug 72 for engagement with a lug 73 on the anti-creep member which may be lifted thereby from its locking position, a lug 70 which is lifted by a cam 68 on the thrower 24 to unlock the coupling or which engages a lug 76 on the lock to hold the lock in its lock-set position for uncoupling, and a lug 82 normally underlying a lug 84 on the lock thrower. Fig. 4 shows a coupler head adapted for use with non-automatic couplings in which a portion 90 normally presenting a buffing surface 94 may be swung about a bolt 98 to allow a screw coupling or the like to be connected thereto. Buffing forces are transmitted to teh coupler head via lugs 104, 110 and 106, 112. A signal lug 78 attached to the lock 20 projects through an opening in the head to indicate that the lock is set for coupling.
