Abstract
679,158. Brass wind musical instruments. ROOPE. J. W. T. March 19, 1951. [March 20, 1950] No. 6825/50. Class 88 (ii). A mute comprises a cylinder 1 of metal or plastic closed at one end and clipped at the other end to the bell 4 of the instrument. Inside this cylinder 1 and secured to a flange 2 at its open end is a second cylinder 5 of spongy rubber, closed at its other end and enclosing a volume of air equal to that enclosed by the instrument. Sound-absorbing material 6 is packed between the two cylinders. In the open end of the mute is suspended a microphone 7 supplying, through a volume control and an amplifier, headphones worn by the player.
