Abstract
678,088. Axially-adjustable screw conveyers. HAWK, E. A., and JOHNSON, J. A. July 27, 1950. [April 30, 1949] .No. 11560/49. Class 78 (i). [Also in Group V] The rate of extrusion of material through a die positioned at the output end of a screw conveyer barrel is controlled by varying the distance between the die and the output end of the feed screw so as to alter the resistance encountered by the material in passing from said output end of the screw to the die. Material (e.g. plastic) from hopper 14 is conveyed through barrel 16 and pressed through die 15 by screw 21, the shaft 20 of which passes through stuffing box 37 and is journalled in fixed housing 39 by means of drive tube 42, said tube being slidingly fixe4,to said shaft by key 47 and keyway 46 and being revoluble in bearings 43 in housing 39 and being rotated by sprocket 48 fixed to said tube. Handwheel 55 is operated by crowbars through holes 56 therein and is fixed to nut 51 working over screw end 50 of the shaft so that the shaft and screw is slidden back or forth, nut 51 being kept in position by abutment 52 thereon co-operating with abutment 54 on sleeve 53 fixed to the drive tube.
