Abstract
677,983. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 25, 1948 [April 22, 1947], No. 10680/47. Class 39 (i). [Also in Groups XL (b) and XL (c)] Cathode-ray tube apparatus, of the type adapted to display electrical signals on the screen of a cathode-ray tube wherein the screen has a decay time which is so short in relation to the desired display time as to cause objectionable variations in brightness, comprises means for storing the electrical signals in a storage device and means for scanning the storage device a plurality of times to obtain derived signals which are in effect a plurality of repetitions of the signals, and means for reproducing the derived signals on the screen of the cathoderay tube. In Fig. 1 radar signals for a P.P.I. display are fed from an aerial 7 to an electron gun 4 and used to produce a positive charge image on the mosaic screen 2; this is discharged by slow electrons from the gun 5 and the output fed through an amplifier 15 to the display cathode-ray tube 16, part of the output from the amplifier being fed back to the gun 4 to renew the charge-image, the aerial 7 being disconnected. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the display on the screen of cathode-ray tube 25 is focused on to the photo-cathode 21 of tube 18; the photo-electrons charge the mosaic 20 positively by secondary emissions. Electrons from the gun 19 scan the charge image and produce signals in the grid 22, but are unable to reduce the charge since the grid 22 is maintained at a potential above the first secondary emission cross-over point; thus the mosaic may be repeatedly scanned to produce output signals which are fed to the display cathode-ray tube 29. The tube 25 may be formed as an integral part of the tube 18. Two, three, or more storage tubes of the type shown in either Fig. 1 or Fig. 2 may be used with a single display cathode-ray tube.
