Abstract

A mineral lubricating oil composition contains a metal-containing organic compound, an organic polymer, and an oil-soluble mono- or di-alkyl ether of an unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted ethylene or polyethylene glycol. The glycolethers are preferably of the formula: RO(CHR1-CHR11O)nR111, where R is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R1 and R11 are hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R111 is an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms and n is an integer of from 1 to 8. The methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl ethers of polyethylene and polypropylene glycol, such as diethylene glycol mono-ethyl ether, triethylene glycol monomethyl ether and tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether, may be used. Polymers mentioned are lauryl-maleate-vinyl acetate copolymer, and the metal containing compound may be barium or calcium isooctyl phenol sulphide, which may have been reacted with phosphorus sulphide, or calcium petroleum sulphonate. Other conventional additives may also be added.
