Abstract
A lubricating composition, which has a reduced tendency to form lacquer-like deposits when subjected to high temperatures in an engine, contains a major proportion of a hydrocarbon lubricating oil, a minor proportion of one or more substances of the formula <FORM:0730738/III/1> wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radicles and R3 and R4 are alkyl radicles, and sufficient of one or more oil-soluble basic metal salts of organic sulphonates (i.e. metal sulphonates which are sufficiently over-neutralized as to contain a minimum of 20 per cent by weight of metal in excess of the amount theoretically required to form the ordinary neutral organic sulphonate) to reduce or inhibit substantially the lacquer-forming propensities of the composition. The lubricating composition may contain additional ingredients such as oiliness and extreme pressure agents (e.g. phosphorus or sulphur containing organic compounds), viscosity index improvers (e.g. high molecular weight resins), pour point depressants (e.g. high molecular weight polymers or wax-naphthalene condensation products), detergents (e.g. metallic sulphonates or phenolates) and foam inhibitors (e.g. silicones). A list of suitable 2,21-alkylidene bis 4,6-dialkyl-phenols of the above formula is given, while basic metal salts mentioned are the basic calcium, barium, strontium, magnesium, lead, zinc, cobalt, tin and aluminium salts of petroleum sulphonic acids or other alkyl or aryl sulphonic acids. The desired excess of metal may be introduced and held by the organic sulphonates by employing an alcohol as the carrying medium for the metal in the reaction with the sulphonic acid. Thus, in the case of the basic barium salt, methanol may be reacted with barium oxide and the product in turn reacted with an organic sulphonic acid to produce a basic complex. In the examples, compositions are described containing mineral lubricating oil, 2,21-methylene bis (4-methyl-6-t-butylphenol) and basic barium or lead petroleum sulphonate containing about 21 per cent by weight excess metal.
